A contract package: six matched packages with a single spares kit, because a serviced apartment that cannot replace a driver in an hour has a room out of service for a week.

Bathroom lighting is the one part of a house where getting it wrong is a safety matter rather than a taste matter, and it is sold almost entirely on photographs. Every listing here states the zone the fitting may be installed in, the IP rating with both digits explained, the colour rendering index, the lumen output and the efficacy in lumens per circuit watt. If a fitting is not suitable above a bath we say so on the page you are buying it from. If a mirror is backlit and will not light your face, we say that too.

Specification

  • Zone: zones 1 and 2 and outside the zones, which is every position in a domestic bathroom except inside the bath itself
  • IP rating: IP65. Dust tight, and protected against low pressure water jets from any direction. This is the rating for zone 1, which is directly above a bath or in a shower
  • Dimensions: per the schedule supplied with the quotation
  • Light output: sized to 200 lux general and 500 lux at the mirror, which is the CIBSE recommendation for a washroom and the number a specifier will check
  • Colour temperature: 4000K throughout as standard, batch matched across the whole order
  • Colour rendering: CRI 90, with R9 above 50, which is a good deal better than the eighties that this category usually offers and is enough for everything except colour matching makeup
  • Dimming: DALI 2 addressable, so the scheme can be commissioned and recommissioned without rewiring
  • Electrical: Class 2, DALI drivers, with 20 per cent spare capacity designed into every circuit
  • Fire rating: fire rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes, tested to BS 476 Part 21 in both plasterboard and timber joist constructions, and the test certificate is downloadable from this page
  • Standards: BS EN 60598 for luminaires, BS EN 62471 photobiological safety at the exempt group, BS EN 55015 for electromagnetic emissions, UKCA and CE marked, plus BS 5266 for the emergency luminaires where fitted
  • Weight: approximately 61.2 kilograms for the package
  • Guarantee: five years parts and labour on site, extendable to seven
  • Finish: a powder coated matt white that disappears into a ceiling, and the cheapest honest finish we stock
  • Batch matching: every LED module in one order comes from one bin, within a 3 step MacAdam ellipse, so the rooms match each other
  • Emergency: not included, and available as an addition
  • Documents: photometric calculations, a lighting schedule, DALI addressing sheet, emergency test log and O and M manual
  • Spares: every part held in UK stock for ten years
  • Account: 30 day terms on approval, and we take purchase orders

What arrives

  • every luminaire in the package
  • DALI drivers and the addressing sheet
  • emergency luminaires where specified
  • a photometric calculation for the room
  • the lighting schedule and O and M manual
  • a spares kit

Installation

Installation is quoted per site and is usually the right answer, because DALI addressing and emergency commissioning both have to be recorded. Our electricians carry public liability cover, work to your site hours, and issue the test certificates and the O and M manual on completion rather than three weeks later.

Choosing between this and the alternatives

Three questions separate a contract supplier from a box shifter. Can you batch match the LEDs so twenty rooms are the same colour. Can you produce a photometric calculation rather than a guess at how many downlights. Will the parts still exist in year six. The answers here are yes, yes and yes, and every one of them is checkable before you place the order.
