Fitted, not just delivered: the mirror hung, wired to a spur and tested, which is the part most people would rather not do at the top of a ladder over a bath.

Bathroom lighting is the one part of a house where getting it wrong is a safety matter rather than a taste matter, and it is sold almost entirely on photographs. Every listing here states the zone the fitting may be installed in, the IP rating with both digits explained, the colour rendering index, the lumen output and the efficacy in lumens per circuit watt. If a fitting is not suitable above a bath we say so on the page you are buying it from. If a mirror is backlit and will not light your face, we say that too.

Specification

  • Zone: zones 1 and 2 and outside the zones, which is every position in a domestic bathroom except inside the bath itself
  • IP rating: IP65. Dust tight, and protected against low pressure water jets from any direction. This is the rating for zone 1, which is directly above a bath or in a shower
  • Dimensions: as surveyed. A reflected ceiling plan is issued before any work starts
  • Light output: sized to your room at 200 lux general and 400 lux at the mirror, calculated rather than guessed
  • Colour temperature: chosen at survey, matched across every fitting
  • Colour rendering: CRI 95, measured, with R9 above 60. R9 is the deep red value and it is the one that decides whether skin looks like skin. Most bathroom fittings quote a CRI in the eighties and do not quote R9 at all, which is how you end up shaving by a light that makes you look ill
  • Dimming: included, with the dimmer matched to the total load and 20 per cent headroom left
  • Electrical: Class 2 throughout, and the installation is tested and certificated
  • Fire rating: fire rated to 30, 60 and 90 minutes, tested to BS 476 Part 21 in both plasterboard and timber joist constructions, and the test certificate is downloadable from this page
  • Standards: BS EN 60598 for luminaires, BS EN 62471 photobiological safety at the exempt group, BS EN 55015 for electromagnetic emissions, UKCA and CE marked, and the installation is to BS 7671 with an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Works Certificate as appropriate
  • Weight: approximately 24.8 kilograms of fittings
  • Guarantee: seven years on the fitting, the LED module and the driver, plus two years on the workmanship
  • Finish: the same triple plate with a directional brush, which hides limescale spotting far better than polished does and is the sensible choice in a hard water area
  • Survey: free within the M25 and within 40 miles of a regional electrician, chargeable beyond and refunded against the order
  • Notification: Electrical work in a room containing a bath or a shower is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. That means it has to be done by a registered electrician or signed off by building control. Replacing a like for like fitting on an existing circuit is not notifiable. Adding a new circuit, a new socket or a new spur is.
  • Certificate: issued on completion and lodged with the scheme provider, which is what a solicitor will ask for when you sell
  • Making good: fitting holes cut and made good, and the old fittings taken away with a waste transfer note
  • Lead time: two to four weeks from survey

What arrives

  • the survey and a reflected ceiling plan
  • every fitting in the scheme
  • the labour
  • the Part P notification and certificate
  • removal of the old fittings
  • all packaging taken away

Installation

A registered electrician, half a day to a full day. They arrive with the plan from the survey, they test the circuit before and after, and they leave the certificate with you rather than posting it later. The notification to building control is made by us.

Choosing between this and the alternatives

Bathroom electrical work is notifiable, which is the honest reason to pay somebody. Electrical work in a room containing a bath or a shower is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales. That means it has to be done by a registered electrician or signed off by building control. Replacing a like for like fitting on an existing circuit is not notifiable. Adding a new circuit, a new socket or a new spur is. Uncertificated work in a bathroom is the thing that turns up in a conveyancing search and costs more to regularise than it saved. If you are a competent DIYer replacing a fitting like for like on an existing circuit, buy the fittings and do it yourself with our blessing. If there is a new circuit, a new spur or a new position involved, this is the version to buy.
